What is Latex?
Latex is the milky sap from the rubber tree Hevea brasiliensis. It doesn't cause problems for most people. But like other things in nature - bee stings, poison ivy, peanuts - Latex can cause problems for some people. Those problems can range from minor skin irritation to reactions so severe that emergency medical treatment is necessary.
Latex Allergies
Latex is found in many products. One of the primary stimulants to Latex allergy is Latex balloons. They are manufactured of very high, sensitizing Latex proteins and rank on the top of the list of allergens that causes allergic response. Latex is also found in many elastic, thread and lace products.
In the last five years Latex allergies have become more common and their consequences better recognized.
People most at risk of having or developing a Latex allergy are those who have other allergies (such as hay fever) and regularly use Latex products. High risk people who have been identified include those who use Latex gloves in their everyday occupations. This includes physicians, nurses, dentists, hygenists, and other health care professionals. Symptoms include respiratory problems, eczema, hay-fever-type reactions such as itchy swollen eyes, runny nose and sneezing and in some cases, asthma symptoms.
