What to do When Someone You Know is Diagnosed with Breast Cancer

When someone you care about is diagnosed with breast cancer it is difficult to focus on anything else. As a friend or family member you want to do something, but you feel helpless. Here are a few steps you can take to encourage her, and help her prepare for the journey ahead.

  • Be optimistic, yet careful not to downplay her fears and concerns.
  • Be a good listener, but do not offer advice.
  • Respect her emotions, fears, and her choices.
  • Make certain she understands she has options, and a voice in her treatment.
  • Research local resources and support services.
  • Try to locate a long term breast cancer survivor she can talk and share with.
  • Encourage her to make a list of questions to ask the doctor. Have her request details about what she can expect after surgery. Information is powerful and will help her to feel in control of her body and her life.
  • Offer your time to run errands, make phone calls or provide transportation to and from doctor appointments. Be a 'second set of ears' by accompanying her through the flurry of pre-surgery appointments. Take notes for her to review later at home.
  • Go to the library or book store and pick up a copy of Dr. Susan Love's Breast Book, it will answer many of her questions.
  • To ease her concerns about appearance and self image after surgery, GIVE HER A HUG, THEN GIVE HER A SOFTEE® RECOVERY CAMISOLE

The SOFTEE® - Comfort with Confidence

    The SOFTEE® TWO

The soft, comforting SOFTEE® TWO Recovery Camisole will offer reassurance by immediately restoring her shape. The step into and pull up design helps her to independently and privately dress herself, if so desired.

For her convenience all of the adjustments are on the outside of the camisole. She can easily adjust the breast form(s), then tuck the surgical drain bulb into the 'roo' pocket, while wearing the garment. She will feel confident and secure as she returns home to begin healing.

Because lifting her arm(s) may be awkward and uncomfortable for a few days, remind her to take a loose fitting, front opening blouse to the hospital to wear over her SOFTEE®.

She will continue to appreciate your gift of the SOFTEE® long after recovery. She will find the SOFTEE® useful during radiation treatments and for leisure, sleep, or whenever she prefers to be comfortable yet still have a natural and balanced appearance.

Your gift of a SOFTEE® will always remind her how much you care.
