• Be optimistic, yet careful not to downplay her fears and concerns.
• Be a good listener, but do not offer advice.
• Respect her emotions, fears, and her choices.
• Make certain she understands she has options, and a voice in her treatment.
• Research local resources and support services.
• Try to locate a long term breast cancer survivor she can talk and share with.
• Encourage her to make a list of questions to ask the doctor. Have her request details about what she can expect after surgery. Information is powerful and will help her to feel in control of her body and her life.
• Offer your time to run errands, make phone calls or provide transportation to and from doctor appointments. Be a 'second set of ears' by accompanying her through the flurry of pre-surgery appointments. Take notes for her to review later at home.
• Go to the library or book store and pick up a copy of Dr. Susan Love's Breast Book, it will answer many of her questions.
