The Importance of a Breast Prosthesis
by Linda Jackson

Why is a prosthesis important?

The fitting of a weighted breast prosthesis is not only for aesthetic appearances. It is also a therapeutic measure that replaces the weight of the lost breast. When fitted with a breast prosthesis that matches in size to the remaining breast, the weight equilibrium of the body is kept in balance.

Because the human body is essentially symmetrical, imbalance occurs when a breast is removed. This imbalance can cause one shoulder to drop downward and inward and the other shoulder to rise up. When the body is not properly aligned, back, shoulder and neck discomfort may result. A weighted silicone prosthesis restores the body's natural balance by approximating the remaining breast in weight and balance, as well as in projection and width. The silicone breast prosthesis warms to a woman's body temperature and appears smooth and natural under clothing. The weight of the silicone prosthesis will also keep the bra from riding up or pulling to one side.

How soon after a mastectomy can a weighted prosthesis be worn?

As soon as a woman receives permission from her physician, she can schedule an appointment to be fitted with a silicone prosthesis. Usually in four to six weeks. Swelling and tenderness should be gone. You and your Doctor will decide when you are ready. During this recovery time, Ladies First recommends the SOFTEE® TWO and Original SOFTEE® which are ideal for wearing home from the hospital and throughout healing.

SOFTEE® products, surgical bras, and prosthetics are covered by Medicare and most private insurance carriers. You should receive a prescription from your Doctor for all SOFTEE® garments, prosthesis and surgical bras. (Surgical bras are specifically designed with inside pockets to securely hold a weighted prosthesis.)

Where do you go for a prosthesis and what can you expect

By calling Ladies First, Inc. Customer Service Department at 1-800-497-8285, we can direct you to an authorized retailer near your home. There are specialty boutiques, women's centers, and other authorized retailers.

It is very important to be fitted by a professional certified fitter to insure proper fit of your bras and prosthesis. You can expect an emphasis on personal, confidential service in a private environment that is designed to put you at ease. Through a fitter's expertise you will enhance your comfort, appearance and self-image.

First, you will be fitted for size and style in a surgical bra. When the proper fit has been achieved, the suitable size of breast prosthesis will be inserted into the pocket on the mastectomy side of the bra. Your fit should be comfortable and the prosthesis should match the remaining breast in shape, weight, and appearance.

How do you care for your prosthesis?

Whenever you change your bra, you should carefully remove the prosthesis from its cover and gently hand wash it in mild soap and warm water. Rinse and pat dry. Return the prosthesis to a clean cover. When not being worn the prosthesis should be properly stored in its original box and contoured cradle. The outer film can be damaged by punctures. Use special care around long finger nails, jewelry and domestic animals with sharp claws.

Most silicone breast prosthesis come with a 24 month warranty against manufacturers defects. The average life of a prosthesis is three to five years; however, with proper care, it could last much longer.
